TSC Statement on Conversion of 44,000 JSS Interns to Permanent Terms

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a statement explaining the future of the 44,000 junior school teacher interns currently serving in schools across the country.

The Commission says the Government continues to prioritise job creation and youth employment, including through internship programmes in the public service. These programmes are meant to give young professionals practical experience and prepare them for permanent jobs.

The Teacher Internship Programme, which began in 2019, was introduced to help newly qualified teachers gain real classroom experience and improve their professional skills.

Following a court ruling delivered on 27th February 2026, TSC says it is now working to secure the necessary budget to employ the 44,000 serving teacher interns on permanent and pensionable terms.

According to the Commission, this process is aimed at improving the welfare of the interns while also strengthening teaching and learning in schools. It also supports effective implementation of the curriculum across the country.

TSC has appealed to the affected teacher interns to remain patient as the Government mobilises resources needed to complete the transition process.

The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to improving teachers’ working conditions, safeguarding their welfare, and promoting stability and professionalism in the education sector. It further thanked teachers for their continued dedication in supporting learners nationwide.

The statement was signed by E.J. Mitei (Ms.), Acting Secretary and Chief Executive of the Teachers Service Commission, dated 29th April 2026.
