The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is set to pay teachers who invigilated the 2025 national examinations and assessments.
This follows approval by the National Treasury of sh 1.5 billion to clear delayed allowances for thousands of teachers and other officials involved in administering national exams.
The payment is expected to end a four-month delay. Although teachers had threatened to boycott future exam duties due to delayed payments, Education CS Julius Ogamba has assured that new measures have been put in place to ensure timely future disbursements.
Each year, KNEC contracts professionals such as teachers, drivers, and security personnel to support the examination process. While KNEC does not directly pay for teaching services at exam centres, it reimburses transport and facilitation allowances after marking and release of results.
KNEC has urged teachers who may experience delays in payment to follow proper procedures and ensure their records are correctly captured in the system.
According to the Council, most delays arise from data mismatches and incomplete documentation.
